Box Office Report: 'Puss in Boots' on Track for Halloween Record $36-$38 Mil

DreamWorks Animation's Puss in Boots is dominating the Halloween box office with a Friday gross of $9 million to $9.5 million, putting the 3D toon on course for a record $36 million to $38 million weekend. The current crownholder for best Halloween weekend opening is Lionsgate's Saw III, which grossed just north of $33 million in 2006. It's almost unheard of for a family film to open over Halloween, but Paramount and DreamWorks Animation wanted to give Puss in Boots more breathing room before a deluge of Thanksgiving family titles open later in November. The downside, according to Paramount: Puss in Boots could forfeit business in its first weekend since kids could be otherwise occupied. PHOTOS: 'Puss in Boots' and 9 Other Sexy Cartoons That puts pressure on Puss in Boots to have a strong hold next weekend, when it was originally supposed to open, the same frame that DreamWorks Animation's Megamind opened last year to $46 million. Going in Puss in Boots' favor is strong reviews. Paramount also took the No. 2 spot on Friday with horror pic Paranormal Activity 3, which fell more than 70% on its second Friday to an estimated $7.9 million. The film, already earning nearly $70 million domestically, is on course for a $20 million weekend, and should enjoy a strong Monday because of Halloween. REVIEW: 'Puss in Boots' Paranormal Activity 3 is besting Justin Timberlake-Amanday Seyfried's new sci-fi thriller In Time, which grossed a soft $4.9 million on Friday for a $12 million to $13 million weekend. Fox is distributing the $35 million pic, directed by Andrew Niccol, for partner New Regency, which fully financed the film. The news was all-out glum for Johnny Depp starrer The Rum Diary, which took in less than $2 million on Friday for a projected weekend debut of $6 million or less. FilmDistrict is distributing the movie, which is based on Hunter S. Thompson's semi-autobiographical novel. Related Topics Box Office The Rum Diary Puss in Boots In Time

SAG, AFTRA take on IMDb

Hollywood's performers' unions have attacked IMDb for publishing the actual dates of birth of thousands of actors without their consent. The Screen Actor Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists went public with the issue Thursday via a joint statement. The unions asserted that they had been unsuccessful in efforts to persuade IMBd to alter its practice.A rep for IMDb was not immediately available to comment.SAG and AFTRA said most of the affected actors aren't celebrities but rank-and-file actors whose names are unknown to the general public."When their actual ages then become known to casting personnel, the 10+ year age range that many of them can portray suddenly shrinks, and so do their opportunities to work," the unions said.SAG and AFTRA said businesses like IMDb have a "moral and legal obligation" not to facilitate age discrimination in employment."Entertainment industry employers who would never directly ask a potential employee's age routinely access that information through IMDb and its professional subscription site IMDbPro. IMDb has the power to remove the temptation for employers to engage in age discrimination by accessing this information," the unions said. The unions also said they were "disappointed" that IMDb has rejected the efforts of SAG, AFTRA and other entertainment industry unions and workers to work together to reach a solution to this problem."It is time for IMDb to step up and take responsibility for the harm it has caused, and to take appropriate measures to protect entertainment industry workers, including actors, from losing jobs for the enhancement of IMDb's financial statements," the statement concluded. Report: Twentieth Century Fox Wants Will Smith to Save Movies; Plans Two 'Independence Day' Sequels

Welcome to Earth. On the heels of the news that Warner Bros. might produce a sequel to 'Dumb & Dumber' 17 years after the original film, Vulture reports that 20th Century Fox is hot on the idea of back-to-back sequels to the 1996 blockbuster 'Independence Day,' with or without Will Smith leading the way. Preferably with. The skinny: Fox has been trying to get Smith onboard for the sequels since 2009, but the negotiations hit a snag when the world's biggest star demanded $50 million in salary. (Hear hear for the 1 percent!) Two years later, with the scripts reportedly set to hit Fox before the end of 2011, the parties are talking again in the hopes that something will work out. If it doesn't, however, the studio will likely still move forward with the films; after all, 'Independence Day' made Will Smith a superstar, and you could argue that it wasn't reciprocal at the time. Of course, as Vulture points out, perhaps the studio should do all it can to get Smith to kick alien ass once again. Box office figures are stagnant, and while it's a leap to say that's because Smith hasn't made a "Will Smith Blockbuster" since 'Hancock' in 2008, the stats are striking. As Vulture notes, between 2005 and 2008, Smith starred in five films, whose box-office grosses topped $2 billion worldwide. Considering ticket sales are down 4.4 percent year-to-date between 2010 and 2011, Hollywood could use a little Big Willie. Smith returns to theaters in 2012 with 'Men In Black III,' a production that saw costs rise thanks to lengthy delays and script revisions. The hope for Fox is that all ducks will be in a row before going forth with Smith attached to 'ID4 2' and '3.' Kristen Stewart's Snow White and the Huntsman Sounds Increasingly Badass

“Basically, I’m fighting evil — I’m fighting the most evil motherf—kers — and it’s fine that they’re being killed,” Kristen Stewart told Box Office Magazine of her currently-filming Snow White and the Huntsman. “It’s anguish. It’s literally f—king anguish. She takes absolutely no pleasure in ever hurting anything. I’m exhausted right now and I was thinking, ‘The fight stuff is coming up, maybe that won’t be so bad.’ And then I realized that they’re probably going to be my most emotional scenes because I’m killing people and I’m Snow White. It’s a really f—king cool way to approach a movie where so many people die.” Score another badass point in favor of SWATH. Sorry, other Snow White movie. [Box Office Magazine]

Another Surprising Elimination On Dancing

First Published: October 11, 2011 10:41 PM EDT Credit: ABC Caption The cast of Week 4 of Dancing with the Stars, Oct. 10, 2011LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- It was movie week on Dancing with the Stars, but despite inspiration from a box office smash, one celebritys performance proved to be a ballroom bomb, leading to their elimination from the competition. (Spoiler: This story contains the results from Tuesdays Dancing with the Stars: The Results Show.) It truly was a Mission: Impossible for Chynna Phillips and professional partner Tony Dovolani, who after a disastrous tango to the theme from the Tom Cruise box office franchise (and originally, the 1960s television series) became the fourth couple to be cut from the competition. Im disappointed. Im sad, but I have to take responsibility, Chynna said, referring to her dance on Monday where her mind went blank and she forgot her steps only getting through with subtle cues from Tony. I messed up, she continued, before praising Tony, calling her Season 13 partner, amazing. Chynna was originally a leaderboard frontrunner, coming out strong in Week 1 with a tie for the top spot (with J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff) and later, landing in the top half of competitors each week. On Monday, however, Chynna and Tony received their lowest scores, tying Chaz Bono and Lacey Schwimmer, and Nancy Grace and Tristan MacManus for sixth place. Nancy and Tristan, as well as Rob Kardashian and Cheryl Burke, were the other competitors who did not learn their Dancing fate until the end of the night on Tuesdays results show. AH Nation Poll: Did the right person go home on Dancing? Click HERE to vote! Chaz and Lacey were saved very early on in the evening, and Chazs mom, Cher, even Tweeted she hopes to return to the ballroom to cheer on her son. YEAH ! CHAZ GETS 2 DANCE ANOTHER WK! THANK U, Cher Tweeted in all caps as the show ended. DOES THIS MEAN IM ABOUT 2B CAST MEMBER OF DWTS? I might HAVE 1 MORE CAMEO UP MY SLEEVE. Aside from the elimination news, Dancings own big screen beauty two-time mirrorball champ Julianne Hough returned to the ballroom for the first time in more than two years, performing a modern dance to a slowed-down version of Holding Out For A Hero alongside her Footloose co-star, Kenny Wormald. As that number concluded, a gaggle of dancers in Footloose style clothing, hit the stage showing off their line dance moves, as country star (and coach on NBCs The Voice) Blake Shelton performed the Kenny Loggins classic Footloose, which he re-did for the movie reboot. The dances received a standing ovation, bringing Julianne to tears. Im emotional, Julianne admitted. Later, she reunited with brother Derek Hough, taking the stage with a rousing dance full of flips and fancy moves to Shake A Tail Feather. Woo Hoo! Fox Orders Two More Seasons of The Simpsons

The Simpsons The Simpsons will live on! Fox has renewed the longest-running comedy for two more seasons, Seasons 24 and 25, which will include the show's 500th episode in February 2012, the network announced Friday. The Simpsons cast close to signing deal - but how much will they make? The renewal comes as a relief to fans. On Monday, the network reportedly gave the cast an ultimatum: Agree to take a 45 percent pay cut by Friday or the animated series will be canceled. The new deal reportedly won't reduce their salaries as much as Fox originally demanded, but it will not include any revenue pay. On Monday, it was reported that the actors - Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith, Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer - proposed a 30 percent pay cut in exchange for a small percentage of the show's back-end profits, which includes syndication and merchandising. But that offer was swiftly rejected by the network. Early Friday, Shearer spoke out against Fox, saying he would take a pay cut as large as 70 percent in order to get a share of the sitcom's hefty profits. Shearer said there were "simply no circumstances under which the network would consider allowing me or any of the actors to share in the show's success." Fox gives Simpsons actors an ultimatum The show's producers already agreed to salary reductions, but several of them already have deals that include compensation from back-end profits. Created by Matt Groening, The Simpsons airs Sundays at 8/7c on Fox. Following the World Series, The Simpsons will return with "Treehouse of Horrors XXII" on Sunday, Oct. 30.

We Can All Learn Something from A Madea Christmas

Movieline hero Tyler Perry may be busy filming I, Alex Cross and blogging to his choir, but his wisdom never ceases to spread throughout the land, as in trailer for Lionsgate’s holiday-timed DVD and Blu-ray release of A Madea Christmas. Hallelujer! The home video release is a filmed version of Perry’s stage play A Madea Christmas, in which Madea, Aunt Bam (Cassi Davis) and Co. trek to well-to-do Cape Cod to clash with some unreasonable uppity folk. Guess who’ll be doling out lessons in good, old fashioned Christmasy values? Look, I’ve had a newfound, unironic appreciation for Perry and his Madea schtick ever since I found myself rolling in the aisles (pretty much by myself, but still) during Madea’s Big Happy Family. And do you know what this Madea joint has that the other Madea films and plays don’t? MUSICAL NUMBERS! A Madea Christmas hits shelves November 22. I know what my fellow Movieline editors are getting for Christmas. Stocking stuffer!

If your head’s not yet spinning, click ahead to see the family member-on-family member emotional crimes on display in the trailer for the messy matrimonial movie event of the year. To be more specific, Barkin plays a troubled matriarch, who, following years of mothering missteps, attends the wedding of an estranged son (Michael Nardelli) after springing her other son (Ezra Miller) from rehab. During the course of the wedding weekend, Barkin’s character clashes with her own resentful mother (Burstyn), strangles her ex’s former stripper wife (Moore), hits her son (Miller) and unleashes her own complicated, pent-up emotions on anyone within crying or screaming range. After the film ignited a Sundance bidding war earlier this year, Mandalay Vision snapped up the angsty indie, written and directed by Levinson. Look for Another Happy Day in theaters November 4. VERDICT: Bring on the crazy. [via ComingSoon.net]
